Charlie Hebdo
Dear Dad,
I am writing you to tell you on wednesday, January 7th, 12 people were killed due to a controversial newspaper article depicting Muhammad, the prophet of Islam. The shooting took place in an office and exchanged shots with police in the street outside before escaping by car. They later abandoned the car in Rue de Meaux, northern Paris, where they hijacked a second car. The newspaper article was published by Charlie Hebdo, who was one of the twelve killed. Four of the magazine's well-known cartoonists, including its editor, were among those killed, as well as two police officers. The extremists who did this are now being hunted down. There were originally said to be two extremists, but after recent updates, there is said to be three.
It’s hard to wrap my head around what happened. There is such a fine line between being funny, and disrespectful. In this case, I understand how the Muslims would be mad, but also there is no justification for what they did in return. As Americans, we have freedom of speech, and we should be able to express our humor without being killed. I personally don't think the Charlie Hebdo did anything wrong. I don’t believe he went too far. It’s not like the Muslim culture is the only culture that the comics are joking about. He makes fun of different religions and cultures, but the response to those comics were laughs, not deaths. Where we live, we are allowed to express how we feel, and although that might not be like that in other cultures, don’t come over to our territory and kill innocent people. It might sound insensitive, and I know people are saying that Charlie went to far, and I understand that. But if we went to far as to depict Muhammad, they went off the charts too far to kill twelve people. Please write back and tell me what you think. Hope everythings going well, and I’m safe for now.
